This particular black tourmaline displays streaks of red where iron is present. Due to the complex and various combinations of elements in tourmaline, it is the most multicolored mineral type known, occurring in virtually every color of the spectrum. It has many interesting optical properties. Some specimens appear darker or differ in color when seen through their horizontal versus vertical axis. This mineral is also piezoelectric which means that through mechanical action an electric pulse is formed, similar to quartz.
